Treacle is now off heat and last week came back in da house. Then about a week ago I was saying to my husband, David how well Smudge was looking and that I had noticed the male dogs checking her out more often than the other bitches (male dogs regularly check their bitches by licking and sniffing at their genital area, but if you notice your male dogs, checking a bitch a bit more often than usual, It will often be because she is not far away from coming on heat), it would not surprise me if she came on heat soon. A couple days ago Smudge came on heat. This is her first heat after having her pups back in April, around seven months since her last heat, so around her normal timing of seven to eight month heat cycle.
So Smudge is now kenneled outside until she is off heat. Hate kenneling the bitches when on heat, but it is the best way, when you have three entire male dogs. It reduces the chances of an accidental mating, it also keeps stress down for the male dogs with each other and if you allow a bitch on heat to go around your home leaving her on heat odour everywhere, be prepared for your male dogs to start cocking their legs everywhere in your home, leaving their distinct odour everywhere. So kenneling bitches whilst on heat also helps to reduce the chance of male dogs wee marking in the home.
Can you teach an old dog new tricks ?
Of course you can, as long as you are prepared to let that old dog teach you a trick or two.
“The greatest pleasure of a dog is that you may make a fool of yourself with him, and not only will he not scold you,but he will make a fool of himself, too.”
