Had a very hectic last couple of weeks as 3 of are girls decided to come on heat, so has been a juggling act to make sure that the wrong dogs do not end up together. Then I had a phone call & Daisy joined us as her owner Lorraine wanted to use are dog Charlie on her. Daisy is a very petite Tricoloured Cavalier & putting Charlie on her will hopefully produce a very pretty well marked pup.
Daisy stayed with us for a week going home this last Saturday. So last week we were juggling 4 on heat dogs but Daisy has been a credit to her owner & other than giving her a bit of love & cuddles every day she really just fitted in & we did not really notice the extra head.
Lucy are 3 year old Blenheim Cavalier has finally come off her mateable peroid of her heat & she has gone to my sisters Miniature Poodle Rollo to hopefully produce a litter of Cavapoos. From this litter we would expect all the pups to be a Golden Apricot colour with bits of white, so fingers crossed & hope she is in pup. This will be her first litter & she is a strong robust looking Cavalier so hope this is reflected in her off spring.
Due to the interest in this litter we will scan her at 28 days to confirm pregnancy but by 42 days a bitch even carrying a small litter you would know they were in pups as they would have a distinct filling behind the ribs.
Rollo comes & stays with us when we have a girl for him so we have had another guest staying but after being with us a week his services were finally not needed any more this morning & my Mum delivered him home to my sister. Rollo enjoys his little overnight stays with us, must be the company I think. He is a character & now after using him for the fourth time he knows whats going on & when I pick him up in the car he jumps in beside me with gay abandon & great expectation. He is rewarded for his good behaviour with his favourite treat a girl friend.
The other girl we have had on heat is Lucinda but she had a litter early this year so she has to be kept well away from the boys. Hopefully next Spring she will get it together with Oscar are Black & Tan Cavalier boy as she is Ruby we will hope for a litter of Ruby's & Black & Tans.
So I have had a couple weeks of the boys all getting a bit wound up but finally the girls are nearly all of heat now so hopefully the tetesterone levels will lower & the boys will chill out with each other as when there are no bitches on heat all the boys are happy in each others company but once a girl starts to come on heat that can change & even the most matest of boys can get a bit uptight with each other when the sap rises but thankfully it all gets back to being mates when the girl goes off heat.
A bitches heat lasts around 21 days & you should count the first day of heat as when you see blood. Around the 12-14 day is normally when a bitch is mateable but occasional bitches can be earlier or later in their cycle but the majority would fall between the 12-14 days. The bitch though should be kept a tight eye on through out the whole heat so that you do not end up with an accidental litter or pups that do not look like the Father you thought she was having pups with. A bitch can concieve from several matings so it is possible for a bitch to have pups in a litter from more than one Father.
“The greatest pleasure of a dog is that you may make a fool of yourself with him, and not only will he not scold you,but he will make a fool of himself, too.”
