                                       Guide To Buying A Puppy

Getting the right dog is a welcome additon to any household. A faithful companion who is always pleased to see you and offers unconditional love. It is a wonderful thing to come home to a house that is never empty and they can also provide the motivation to take more exercise which you might have been putting off !
But on the other hand getting a dog that is not suited to your lifestyle or is badly bred could lead to heartache and big vet bills.
With this in mind we have put together some information which I hope will help you to make the right decision when looking to bring a new puppy into your life, as I understand that this is a major decision & important for the pups happiness to.
At this stage a good site to help you is www.dogadvisorycouncil.com/puppy/ . Also two good book to read are "The Perfect Puppy" by Gwen Bailey and "In the Defence of Dogs" by John Bradshaw.

                                           Should I have A Puppy?

Having a puppy in your home will be like having a new born baby but more destructive. The time and effort you put into your puppy in the first year of their life will pay dividends for the rest of their life. So you must really ask yourself "Am I in the right place and time in my life to be able to take on the responsibility of a puppy."
Your puppy will probably cry for a couple of nights when you first have them, accidently wee and poo on your floors and chew most anything, if left unsupervised and it will be your job to shape this little bundle into a house-trained, mannered, well socialised and rounded individual, this means that you need time as all these things need to be learnt by good consistent guidance.
At Poundlane we will have done our best to give the puppy a good start and will help with advice and support when needed. If you think you are in the right place and time for a puppy in your life, then be prepared for a bit of hard work, but the payback of a faithful loving friend will soon make you forget your slippers they chewed up or the nice stain they made on your best rug .

                                                  Where To Buy

When deciding on the breed you think will suit your lifestyle you will firstly need to think where to buy. Rescue or from a puppy breeder. Buying a rescue dog is ideal for some people and it enables a dog to have a fresh start to perhaps not a very great past. If you wish to buy a pedigree rescue dog look for breed rescue centre, who specialise in that breed. The Kennel Club has a breed rescue directory on its website www.findarescuedog.org.uk.
For some people, particularly if you want to know the past history and health of your dog or have young children and must be sure of the dogs temperment buying from a breeder may be better. Finding the right breeder then is important. By looking and seeking out a responsible breeder you stand the best chance of getting a dog that will  enjoy a happy and healthy life.
Finding responsible breeders; The Kennel Club operates an Assured Breeder Scheme. The Kennel Club provides the most comprehensive list of breeders and Assured Breeders with puppies available www.findapuppy.org.uk.
At Poundlane we are Assured Breeders of Cavalier King Charles Spaniels and if you would like information on us please contact us howarthmurch@btinternet.com.

                                       Kennel Cub Assured Breeders

Kennel Club Assured Breeders sign up to follow recommended breeding guidelines. They make use of health screening schemes, which help breeders to predict the future health of their puppies. They will ensure that the puppy is seen with its Mother, be prepared to answer any questions, give written advice on all aspects of getting your puppy and tell you about health issues with that breed.  If you want to know more go to www.accreditedbreeders.org.uk. At "Poundlane Cavaliers" we are Assured Breeders and follow the recommendations and guidelines of the Kennel Club. Always make sure the breeder shows you the certificates for any health tests that they say the parents have had.
Never go to a pet shop as their breeding stock come from puppy farms. These are breeders out to make a quick profit with not a care for the health, happiness and welfare of the puppies and Mothers, who are just units of cash and not living and breathing animals that deserve the right to love and care in their upbringing.
Here at Poundlane we are Assured Breeders of Cavalier King Charles Spaniels and if you would like to know more about us contact by email  howarthmurch@btinternet.com or phone for no pressure chat about this wonderful breed on 01769 560969.

                                         What Breed Should I Buy?

The breed of dog you buy will depend on your lifestyle and what you expect from your dog.
What size big, medium or small ? This question  can only be answered when you have  taken into consideration on how much exercise and how much room in your property you have and also what age your children are.
Do you want it to be a guard dog ? Some people like a dog who lets them know when any one is about or some people like a dog which is not so territorial.
Do you want a lot of affection from your dog? Some people like a dog who thrives on love and cuddles and looks for affection, but some like a dog who is not to over affectionate.
To find the breed that will suit your lifestyle and lots of information on buying and settling in your new puppy go to www.thekennelclub.org.uk and www.pdsa.org.uk.

How To Avoid Buying From A Puppy Farm
Please read this information as it is kindly  provided by the  RPSPCA
(Royal Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals)

Thinking of buying a puppy? Make sure you know where your puppy comes from.

Buying a puppy is not as simple as you may think. Sadly, not all puppy breeders and sellers are reputable.

There is a dark side to the trade- puppy trafficking. This is where puppies are breed in large numbers for profit, often with little regard for animal welfare. Many puppies fall sick and die.

To avoid getting caught out by the puppy traffickers, heres some simple steps you can take:

Always see a puppy with its Mother

You should always see a puppy with its Mother in the place where the puppy was bred. Ideally you should see the Father too, or at least a photo of him. If the breeder cannot show you the Mother or Father, you should be suspicious.

                                  Find out the puppy`s background

Get as much information as possible about where the puppy has come from, and beware if the breeder is from outside the UK.

Has the puppy REALLY been vaccinated?

If you are told the puppy has been vaccinated, ask to see the vaccination card. Beware that vaccination cards are easy to fake- if the veterinary surgeon`s contact details are not visible, or has an address from outside the UK, the card may be fake.

Pedigree certificates are not a guarantee

Bear in mind that pedigree certificates are not a guarantee for the condition of your puppy, and may not even mean you are being sold a pure-bred dog.

Always see a puppy in the place it was bred

Do not ever buy from someone who offers to deliver your puppy, or who arranges to meet you somewhere.

Concerned about the welfare of a puppy ?

Never buy a puppy just because you feel sorry for it. If you are concerned about the health or welfare of a puppy, please contact the RSPCA 24-hour cruelty and advice line: 0300 1234 999.

What to do if things go wrong

If you have concerns about the way your puppy has been sold, visit Consumer Direct(http://www.consumerdirect.gov.uk) who will be able to give you advice and, where appropriate, pass details on to your local Trading Standards Service for investigation.

For more informationabout buying a puppy visit the RSPCA`s website: http://www.rspca.org.uk/buyingapuppy.
